To make a point about the difference among generations X and Y, Fire Chief Dave Kimbrell of Hall County (Ga.) Emergency Services removed his suit jacket and dress shirt to reveal the Hawaiian shirt underneath—something he thought the “Gen Y” members of the crowd would appreciate. After all, they would likely respond to a casual, more laid-back presenter.

Kelvin Cochran Becomes U.S. Fire Administrator

Perhaps the biggest, most noteworthy event to take place at FRI, or any fire service conference for that matter, was the swearing in of Chief Kelvin Cochran as the new U.S. Fire Administrator by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. The swearing in of this position has never before occurred at Fire-Rescue International.

Fire-Rescue International offers a lengthy list of classes and workshops, but one in particular caught my eye. As an editor for FireRescue magazine, I’m constantly looking for interesting, innovative, timely, practical information that applies to our readers, many of whom are company officers. So when I saw the title of one class in particular in the education listings, “But They’re My Friends: Transitioning to Company Officer to Chief Officer,” I couldn’t resist taking the class and finding out what the class had to offer.

Worcester 10 Years Later: An Insider’s Look

On Dec. 3, 1999, six Worcester (Mass.) Fire Department (WFD) firefighters lost their lives while battling a fire in the vacant Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse Fire. Ten years later, WFD District Chief John F. Sullivan, MPA, spoke about the event in his Fire-Rescue International session “Beyond the Investigation Report: An Insider’s Look at the Worcester LODD Incident.”
